Hana Pera Aoake

Hana Pera Aoake (Ngaati Mahuta, Ngaati Hinerangi, Waikato/Tainui, Ngaati Waewae ki Poutini Kaai Tahu) is a Indigenous artist, writer and independent researcher from Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa/New Zealand.  Their work explores the overlaps and tensions between Indigenous and European epistemologies, by threading bits of both together to weave new meanings and ways of sharing. In 2014 Hana co-founded Fresh and Fruity, an art collective and ARI which is now defunct. Hana currently co-organises Kei te pai press with Morgan Godfery, with whom they co-authored an Ockham Lectures Pocket Edition titled Existing in Multitudes (with Objectspace) in 2021. In 2020 they published a book of selected writing called A bathful of Kawakawa and hot water with Compound Press. In 2021-22 Aoake was a participating artist in Regional Arts Australia’s inaugural Regional Assembly. They live near a dormant volcano on their partner's ancestral lands with their daughter and cat.
