Geo Wyex

Geo Wyex (b. 1984, New York City) is an artist and educator, based in Rotterdam, NL, working in music, performance, narrative sculpture, sound and video. Their most recent record ATM FM (2020), was recorded in Rotterdam and released through Muck Studies Dept. - a constellational narrative framework, and an imaginary city agent surveying the bottom of low-lying water areas, “looking for stars out of what stinks.”  Muck Studies Dept. merges inherited black atlantic funk and folk poetics with techniques of investigative journalism. The project connects mud, water, metal gas, ass, rocks, coins, keys, extractive industry, and sensual expression of belonging to that flood.  Seen at New Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, MoMA PS1, Anthology Film Archives, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Dutch National Opera, Triangle France, The Kitchen, Arsenic (CH), Biquini Wax (CDMX), LA MoCA, New York Live Arts, La MaMa Theatre, Human Resources, The Pyramid Club, Joe’s Pub etc. Geo soundtracked the films Happy Birthday Marsha! (2018), Atlantic is a Sea of Bones (2017), Salacia (2019), and The Personal Things (2016), all directed by Tourmaline.  Recent collaborations with artists Jes Fan, Colin Self, AK Burns, Every Ocean Hughes, Constantine Zavitsanos, Will Rawls. Geo were a Rijksakademie resident in 2015-2016. In 2023, He taught at the University of Pennsylvania’s MFA program under the mentorship of Sharon Hayes.  He has also taught at Dutch Art Institute (DAI) 2018-2020,  and sustains his practice from doing performance workshops with worldwide shipping. Recent financial support from the Mondriaan Fonds, the Dolf Henkes Prijs (winner), and the Hartwig Art Production Collection Fund. He lives and works in Rotterdam NL next to the Maas River.
