BASE FOR EXPERIMENT, ART AND RESEARCH (FINE ART ARNHEM)
BEAR FINALS 2019
Fourth Wall is the title of the graduation show of ArtEZ where 22 students of BEAR (Base of Experiment, Art & Research) present their work for the first time to you, also referred to as the public.
The fourth wall is a convention in the theatre, it is an imaginary wall, separating actors on stage from their audience. The actors act as if there was no audience. The same goes for visual artists; back in their studio’s, these young artists are not yet fully aware of their future audience. They were physically separated from you, the public, although you were always lurking somewhere in the back of their minds.
Now ArtEZ opens its doors: former artist studios and places of artmaking are turned into clean exhibition spaces. You will discover different approaches, media and perspectives by artists at the very beginning of their career. After four years of developing their artistic practice and re-thinking their assumptions about making art, both theoretical as well as practical, it’s time to reach out.
This exhibition is an instant of transition. During these five days, the artists will interact with you.
“We want to create a sense of awareness, allowing us to deliberately accentuate what we value in our work,” as they put it. Thus, breaking down the Fourth Wall between them and you.
